Did you know the best product you can use for cleaning your motorcycle chain is our MX11 Brake & Chain Cleaner? It’s one of our most popular products amongst our customers so we’ve decided to put together a guide on how best to maintain your motorcycle chain.
How often should I use INOX MX11 to clean my chain?
We recommend cleaning your chain every 500-1000 kilometres in order to limit the number of adjustments it will need and to ensure you don’t get any kinks or tight spots.
How long will it take me to clean my motorcycle chain?
Cleaning your chain is a straightforward process that will only take about 5-10 minutes which is a relatively minor amount of time given how beneficial this process is for the life of your chain. Allow 15 minutes for cleaning and greasing.
Why is it so important to clean my chain?
Cleaning and greasing your chain is vital because it reduces the wear between your chain and your sprocket which stops your chain from stretching or developing tight spots. This will minimise the overall wear and tear of your chain and will really help to extend its life.
How do I clean my chain with INOX MX11?
Cleaning your motorcycle chain is part of a simple 3 step process which we have outlined below:
Step 1:
First of all, you need to inspect your chain before every ride. Check the chain and sprockets for damage, stiffness, or tight spots. Make sure the rear wheel rotates freely – if it doesn’t, it’s a sign your chain needs adjusted or replaced.
Step 2:
You should always clean your chain with MX11 Brake & Chain Cleaner before lubing it because the lube and dirt will mix together to create a ‘grinding paste’ which can massively reduce the lifespan of your chain. If your chain is dirty or caked with grime, get in there with an old toothbrush or scrubbing brush as well as your MX11 Brake & Chain Cleaner and give it a deep clean. This is the perfect product to dissolve oil, grease, dirt, and grime on your chain. What’s more, it’s a solvent-based cleaner that dries in a matter of minutes and leaves no residue behind.
Step 3:
Always make sure you lubricate your chain after riding, not before. Lubing before you ride can stop the solvents from properly coating the chain and being absorbed into it. Get your bike onto a stand so you can spin the rear wheel. Begin to spray the chain with a thin but even coating of MX11 ensuring the nozzle is pointed at the inside of the chain. Whilst doing this, rotate the back wheel until you have seen 3 entire revolutions of the chain. This will ensure a thorough and effective amount of lube is applied.
Are you into motorsports or perhaps you just enjoy going out for a ride on your motorcycle to clear your head? Either way, you should make sure you’re well-stocked with MX11 and our other lubricants which are designed to help you maintain your motorcycle.
