With decent rain falling on much of the country, chances are your garden has gone nuts, so it’s also a great time to freshen up yours! There are plenty of low-cost ways to tizzy up your yard, with a high-end result that will leave the neighbours with some serious yard envy. Here at INOX, we’ve put together a list of our favourite ways to rejuvenate a backyard.
Trim Overgrown Trees
If your yard is looking a bit like an overgrown nightmare, you’ll want to start with this step. Now, it can be a bit overwhelming, depending on when it was last cleared, but you’ll feel so much better once it’s done. All you’ll need is a hedge trimmer for clipping thick branches, a tree shear for smaller ones, and a wheelbarrow to collect the cuttings. Next, you’ll want to get to your hedges (if you have any) with clippers and, lastly, use a rake to remove the debris and dead leaves off of the grass. Did you know that dead leaves invite bacteria and mould? This can lead to an increased risk of infection in your shrubs, so that last step definitely shouldn’t be missed!
Mow the Lawn
Look, we know this is an obvious one – but hear us out. You’ll want to do a few things to your mower before you begin so that you can cut your grass like never before! Grab your mower blades and sharpen them so they can provide a cleaner cut, as a dull blade can damage the lawn and leave you with an uneven finish. While you’re at it, you can use some INOX MX3 to lubricate your mower, aiding in anti-corrosion. When this is done, adjust your blade height to ensure that they’re going to cut the grass from around 2.5/3 inches. And the last step – stop and admire your work!
Pressure Wash your Patio or Tiles
This is an effective way to remove years of built-up grime, moss, debris, and just general dirt that accumulates over time. It’ll work on materials like bricks, pavers, concrete, and wood. You can use a mild detergent if you feel there are stubborn stains; otherwise, the water’s high pressure should be enough to have a very satisfying after effect! If you don’t already own one, there are plenty of hiring options available. Just for added satisfaction, we advise you to google pressure washing before and after videos; they’re seriously mesmerising.
Start a Compost Pile
If you’ve never had a compost pile before, now’s a great time to start! They’re one of the richest forms of soil you could treat your yard to, and better yet, it’s something you can create all by yourself. To start, you’ll need to break up a mixture of ‘brown’ and ‘green’ materials in a 3×3 container; this can be a proper composting bin or a wooden planter that you can make yourself. The brown can include the trimmings you took from the yard earlier, alongside manure, soil, dead leaves, and wood chips. The green can be made up of used fruit and vegetable scraps, as well as eggshells!
Plant Flowers/Herbs
Flowers can be the best way to add vibrance and life back into a yard that requires some serious TLC. Using your compost soil, after a bit of time, you can be guaranteed to have some super happy and healthy plants! Growing your own herbs doubles as a great decorative feature, while tasting amazing in your cooking and is also super nutritious – it’s a win-win!
