If you’re feeling anything like the way the team at INOX is, you’re probably missing your regular hobbies and activities, considering most of them include being outside on the boat or bike. The government isolation regulations are extremely important to uphold in order to decrease the spread of the coronavirus, so we’ve come up with a task that we think a lot of you would enjoy doing during your extra free time! If your garage is usually the place that gets left at the bottom of your ‘to-do’ list, now is the time to stop tripping over cables and misplacing screws!

These are our 5 tips to help you transform and organise your garage or shed:

1. Declutter and clean out

In any good old transformation, the first step is to always start with a clean slate. This could be a lengthy process depending on whether or not it’s ever been organised before, but it’s the most important step! If you haven’t used something in over 12 months, and it is not an essential item, it’s time for it to go. By only keeping the necessary items, you’ll be able to maintain a clutter-free space that you can give a quick once over every few months. Trust us, there’s nothing more satisfying than saying goodbye to things you’ve held onto for years for no real purpose!

2. Categorise zones

No matter the size of the space you’re working with, creating ‘zones’ in your shed will allow you to accurately organise your items. Having a cohesive order of operations when you walk into your garage or shed will allow you to spend less time trying to find the things you came in for, so we recommend finding a home for everything. Since you would have decluttered the space, you might even find that by the time you get to zoning, you have some extra space for some new toys! That’s a win-win.

3. Group items together

This is similar to creating zones, but the crucial step is having your tools, chemicals, machinery etc, together in their respective spots. This will vary depending on your personal needs, for example, you wouldn’t want to mix up the kids toys with your INOX lubricants or equipment. You could also organise this into indoor and outdoor items or perhaps things you may use regularly vs. long-term storage items.

4. Shelving/Storage

Now that you’ve decluttered, zoned and grouped all of your garage items, now is the time to figure out how you would like to store everything. You can get quite creative with this step to completely maximise your space – think vertical hanging. It’s likely that you will need a mixture of shelving, tubs, a cabinet and/or a workbench for all of your tinkering. Most garages/sheds have the real estate for items such as bicycles, rakes, shovels, ladders, hoses and extension cords to be hung from higher up, reducing clutter on the ground.

5. Hooks, hooks and more hooks

The title says it all, these will be your greatest asset in your transformation. If you haven’t already got something similar already, investing in a pegboard with various hooks on it will allow you to organise all of those loose nuts and bolts into tubs that are easily accessible. Not only does this help you source the items you’re looking for faster, but it also allows you to reduce the amount of unnecessarily bulky toolboxes you may currently be using to store everything.
