With high-quality ingredients and clever formulations across the board, choosing just one can be the hardest part.

One of the most common questions we get from customers is: Which grease do I actually need? INOX produces three distinct greases: LANOX MX4G Lanolin Grease, INOX MX6 Food Grade Rubber Grease and INOX MX8 Extreme Pressure Grease. Rather than overlapping, each is built to do a different job exceptionally well. Let’s break it down.

Three Greases, Three Strengths

Think of it this way:

  • LANOX MX4G is your go-to for corrosion protection and anti-fouling in harsh or coastal environments
  • INOX MX6 is the specialist for food-safe, rubber-compatible and high-temperature applications
  • INOX MX8 is the heavy hitter; built for bearings, grease points and high-load machinery that need to keep working no matter what

LANOX MX4G Lanolin Grease — The Corrosion Fighter

LANOX MX4G is the grease form of the beloved LANOX MX4 lubricant – built on the same pure anhydrous lanolin base that makes the LANOX range so effective in tough environments. It looks a bit like creamed honey and is ideal for areas where protection and ease of maintenance are the priority, rather than for components subjected to heavy pressure or load.  Best suited to moderate temperature applications, LANOX MX4G excels where long-lasting corrosion protection, water resistance and staying power are critical.

Where LANOX MX4G really earns its keep is anywhere corrosion is the main enemy. Salt air, high humidity or constant moisture exposure – LANOX MX4G handles all of it. The lanolin base creates a waterproof, hydrophobic barrier that bonds to metal surfaces and resists wash-off, giving you long-lasting protection between applications. It also stops electrolysis between dissimilar metals, making it a staple for marine fittings, boat trailers and any application where mixed metals meet wet conditions. It’s worth noting though — while LANOX MX4G is ideal for environmental protection, if you’re dealing with more intense, load-bearing or high-pressure applications, INOX MX8 is typically the better choice.

Beyond corrosion, LANOX MX4G earns its keep as an anti-seize compound. Applied to bolts, nuts and threaded rod before joining, it prevents threads from corroding together over time; so when you come back later, things actually undo. It’s equally suited to use around rubber, neoprene seals and O-rings, where material compatibility matters, as well as general surface protection in storage and harsh environments.

Best for: Marine and coastal environments, trailers, farm machinery, earthmoving equipment, anchor chains and shackles, anti-seize on threaded fasteners, rubber and neoprene protection, as well as long-term storage.

INOX MX6 Food Grade Rubber Grease — The Specialist

INOX MX6 occupies a very specific and important niche. It’s a fully synthetic, high-performance grease built on a polyalphaolefin (PAO) base with a special bentone (organo clay) thickener — and it comes loaded with PTFE for added lubrication between contacting surfaces. It’s also NSF H1 approved, meaning it’s safe for environments where the odd food contact can happen.

The standout feature is its no-melt, temperature performance. INOX MX6 operates from -30°C with a dropping point above 300°C and excellent high-temperature stability. Unlike soap-based greases, it does not have a conventional melting point, meaning it won’t run off in the heat or stiffen in the cold — making it the right choice for anything that cycles between temperature extremes or consistently operates in demanding conditions.

It’s also safe on rubber and synthetic materials, which sets it apart from most other greases. That makes INOX MX6 the grease of choice for O-rings and seals across plumbing, pneumatic control valves, diving gear and food processing equipment. Wherever a seal needs lubricating without the risk of material degradation, INOX MX6 is the answer.

Its NSF H1 food-grade approval opens up another critical category of use. INOX MX6 is suitable for food processing and packaging equipment where incidental food contact may occur, including conveyors, mixers, slicers, bottling lines and filling machinery (to name a few). This makes it a practical choice for operations that need to balance performance under demanding conditions with strict compliance requirements.

Outside the food industry, INOX MX6’s high-temperature stability makes it well-suited to demanding industrial environments where conventional greases can soften, run or carbonise. It also performs reliably in low-temperature environments, maintaining consistency and lubrication in cold storage equipment, refrigerated plant and machinery exposed to winter conditions.

One important note: because INOX MX6 is a clay-based grease, it should not be mixed with non-clay-based greases. When applying any INOX grease, it’s best practice to remove all prior grease first to ensure the best performance.

Best for: Food processing, beverage and packaging equipment, O-rings and rubber seals, diving gear, high-temperature industrial environments, freezers and cold rooms.

INOX MX8 Extreme Pressure Grease — The Workhorse

If LANOX MX4G protects and INOX MX6 specialises, it’s INOX MX8 that performs. It’s a premium lithium complex grease loaded with PTFE and formulated specifically to handle heavy loads, shock loading and the kind of continuous mechanical stress that wears lesser greases out fast.

The lithium complex base gives INOX MX8 exceptional shear stability. It won’t thin out under pressure or thicken as it oxidises. It resists ‘squeeze out’ on loaded surfaces, handles water wash-out even at elevated temperatures and maintains effective lubrication across a working range from -20°C to a dropping point of 260°C. It’s not just extreme temperatures that INOX MX8 can handle. It has a proven capacity to withstand forces of up to 620kg without being squeezed out, dislodged, or flung off. The PTFE inclusion reduces friction at contact surfaces, lowers operating temperatures and extends the service life of the components it’s protecting.

INOX MX8 covers an enormous range of applications, wheel bearings, ball joints, CV joints, tie rod ends, king pins, winches, cables, PTO splines, chain drives, industrial fan motors, conveyor bearings, anchor winches, electrical motor bearings and more. It’s the grease you reach for when something is under serious load and needs to keep working reliably for a long time.

For most grease-point applications on heavy machinery — bearings, universals, sprockets, cables and couplings — INOX MX8 is your default. It’s built for load-bearing work and delivers reliable performance across a huge range of industries.

If you’re working in food processing, around rubber seals or in an environment that hits extreme temperatures in either direction, INOX MX6 is the one. No other INOX grease matches its rubber compatibility and no-melt temperature performance.

For anything in a coastal or marine environment, or where long-term corrosion protection matters — boat trailers, farm machinery in storage, fasteners you want to undo later, fittings exposed to salt air — LANOX MX4G is the right call. It’s also the one to reach for when you need to protect rubber seals and neoprene fittings in a marine context. However, it’s important to note that LANOX MX4G has no load-bearing capacity – so where load-bearing performance is required, INOX MX8 is typically the preferred choice.

While LANOX MX4G and INOX MX8 both perform exceptionally in marine environments, they serve very different purposes. LANOX MX4G is ideal for coating and protecting external surfaces, like applying it to the outside of your boat for long-term corrosion protection. On the other hand, INOX MX8 is designed for moving, load-bearing components like winches, where LANOX MX4G wouldn’t be suitable.

As a general guide, reach for INOX MX8 when load and mechanical wear are the priority, and LANOX MX4G when corrosion protection and long-term surface coverage are the focus.
